Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh fort is a large structure built on the Hill of Eagles region of Aravalli range. It overlooks the Amber fort and the lake near it. It was built to protect the Amber fort. It is also called as Victory Fort.

History of Jaigarh Fort

The fort was built as a fortified wall or a protection cover for Amber fort. Prior to this, during the period of Shah Jahan, the region of Jaigarh fort was a cannon foundry. This was an ideal place for cannon foundry because of the presence of iron ore. In 17th century, when a war broke among Mughal successors, Aurangzeb defeated and killed his brother and captured this region. He appointed Jai Singh II as the king of this region. He modified this cannon foundry into a fortified region.

Jaigarh Fort is Located?

The fort is located on a peak of Aravalli hills. It is about 400 m away from Amber fort. You can get a panoramic view of the Amber fort from this fort. The fort is 10 km away from the main city of Jaipur. The fort is accessed through the Dungar Darwaza Gate, which is a little away from the Jaipur Delhi highway. People can also climb to the fort from the Amber fort.

Best Time to Visit?

The fort is open from 9 am to 5 pm. One of the best part of the fort is the panoramic view from the top that covers the valley, Amber fort and others. Thus, it is better to avoid rainy season so that you can get a good view. The fort covers a very large area and a lot of walking has to be done. Thus, summer is also not suitable. Winter is the most preferred season for visiting the fort. Winter starts in October and ends in March.

Jaigarh Fort is famous for?

The fort has large cannon that was built in the fort. In the past, it was the largest cannon on wheels. The fort walls are made with red sandstones. There is a beautiful square garden inside the complex. The complex has many courtrooms, halls, towers and gardens.

  • Awani Darwaza : This is the place to get a full view of Sagar Lake.
  • Arch gateway : there are numerous arch gateways in the fort. They are painted red and yellow and have Indo-Persian styled carvings.
  • Temples : there are two temples inside the fort. Ram Harihar temple was built in 10th century and KalBhairav temple was built in 12th century.
  • Water tank : a huge water tank can hold 6 million gallon of water. It is said that the hidden treasure of the last king is stored in the tank. It is not open to public.

Tourists should enter the building through an imperial gateway, which opens to a large courtyard. There are two buildings on three sides of the courtyard and the Jaigarh Fort stands on the east side. There is a small museum in the courtyard. The museum has a small collection of weapons, articles and antiques that were used in the past by the royal family. Each window has a chamber behind it where people stand or sit and watch the streets. There is a fountain in front of each chamber. The top two floors are maintained by the archaeological department and can be accessed through ramps.
